Oil on canvas. Framed in a beautifully hand made NZ timber frame, stained natural.

INSPIRATION
It's impossible not to fall in love with Queenstown and the incredible Remarkables.
A family trip to Queenstown doubled as a 'research trip', where I cycled the Queenstown trails, and was able to see the Remarkables from all angles, times of the day, and sky moods.
The Remarkables is the perfect scene for one of my stylised landscapes. But as I got into the work, I found it not so simple. It's big and beautiful and commanding, so that's the mood I was after with this painting.
It didn't need any people or animals to give it any more life or personality, but it felt it did need a bit of humor to balance all the grandeur. How did those rocks get to be tumbling down the hill? Is the geology really so 'rock solid'?
I used a knife to paint the nearer features and the clouds, and softer glazing techniques (layers of color and brushes) for the more distant mountains.
