Original New Zealand artwork inspired by backcountry and coastlines ...
I'm Virginia Watson, a New Zealand artist painting the South Island's dramatic landscapes, estuaries and their wading birds.
Working primarily with a palette knife, I build texture and drama into each piece, emphasising the distinctive forms, light, and life of these increasingly fragile environments. Read more about me below.

Original NZ LandscapesTextured New Zealand landscape paintings, inspired from biking South Island's backcountry.
About Virginia WatsonMy work starts with time spent in places I love. I research by bike, observing and absorbing the vibe, light, shapes, and characters.

From my home, I observe Nelson's Waimea Estuary, and I'm close to the daily shifts in light, tide, curvy channels, and bird life around the coast that are such a strong presence in my work. I paint mostly with a knife, working from the Nelson studio. My paintings are held in private collections across New Zealand, UK, USA, Australia. More ... |
