INSPIRATION
If you have been to the Point, on Kaikoura peninsula, and looked for seals, you will understand this painting.
At first you see none, then you see one or two. Then you realise they're literally everywhere, hiding in plain sight!
This is a beautiful metaphor - when you really look, you find.
Kaikoura's geology is also referenced here in the foreground. Its rock has been layered down, thrust up, and warped over millions of years of seismic activity. The sea's 'valleys' provide feeding grounds for the whales, seals, dolphins, crayfish and other marine life special to Kaikoura.
