About the birds ..
Spoonbill - Technically not a New Zealand native bird, it arrived here in the 1800s. Their numbers have gone from just a few plucky birds to a number of decent sized colonies around New Zealand. They seem to thrive here, and people love them!
Weka - The cheeky New Zealand weka (often confused by tourists for a kiwi!).
It's always on the lookout for a cheeky feed, and it absolutely loves sparkly things. If you're in a tramping hut or at the beach, they'll hang around and make off with your stuff!
Kotuku - or white heron is a rare and solitary bird. Usually seen just by itself, unless it is mating season. It has an incredibly long neck and strong beak for feeding in the shallows.
