You can't not love a pied stilt with its ungainly long legs! They're often standing in shallow, muddy water, which gives a beautiful reflection.


This particular bird I watched feed in the shallows of the muddy inlet beside the Nelson Airport. However I have taken a lot of artistic license with the colors to give it a slightly abstract feel, and make it work as part of the set.


I adore painting shore birds, capturing the essence of an ordinary day on the Inlet, with the wildlife, the tides and the light all working in harmony as it does in nature.
