INSPIRATION
This work chose me! On a trip through Lewis Pass in the car, I glimpsed an incredible view between a couple of trees as we sped past. It was all over in an instant and not really possible to go back for reference photos.
But the scene was now imprinted in my mind as my next large painting - massive roundy rich green hills falling into a chasm, with classic South Island Alps in the background. I remembered that this area is home to some fabulous native New Zealand birds, the most famous being the spotted kiwi. So they had to go on as well.
So the whole work came out of my head with no reference photos. I was pleased there was nothing to work from, so I could reproduce the image that was in my mind.
