The fabulous spoonbill! I so love these gangly-legged, awkward looking birds.
Biking around the estuary, I always look for them. Sometimes the search is rewarded, depending on tides, and where they're hanging out on the day.
Spoonbills feed like a washing machine, with their spoon shaped bill under the water, swish swashing from side to side picking up critters in the mud.
This family is out feeding, with proud and careful dad looking out for his wife and kid.
The landscape is a wintery theme, which was really just an excuse to use those gorgeous soft tones that make the mud and the water.
Details: Oil on linen stretched over a hand made timber frame. Edged in a deep, dark brown. 300mm square, and ready to hang.
