Kahurangi National Park
"Rare and Endangered" - Kahurangi National Park - original painting
Kahurangi National Park, at the top of the the South Island is New Zealand's second largest national park
The Heaphy Track (a New Zealand Great Walk) traverses the park, connecting the South Island's West Coast and the East Coast.
I painted this landscape in winter, and was thinking about the rare and endangered native animals that inhabit the area. So they are hiding in the painting, and just like in real life you you have to look deep in the bush, and even then you may not see anything!
My characters are all locals - spotted kiwi, takahe, and the powelliphanta (giant, carnivorous snail).
I used a palette knife and impasto technique (thick paint) for drama and texture.
