Kakapotahi. Where on earth?
I found it by accident as we pulled to one of the many remote river mouths on South Island's wild West Coast, at dusk. The oystercatchers had the beach to themselves.
I saw the sky, the earth and the water all in a sort of communication. The water was reflecting the sky's mood, and the sand was shifting and shaping in response to the water's demands. And I painted two variations on this theme.
Kakapotahi 1 is off to an exhibition in Wellington in June.
I used a palette knife and impasto technique (thick paint) for the lovely texture, and brush work for a softer more ephemeral mood on the sky and water.
