Punakaiki - 'Ancient Layers'
"Ancient Layers" Punakaiki, New Zealand - original painting
Nick-named Pancake Rocks, Punakaiki perches just beneath a cliff face on the South Island's west coast.
Time, tide, and tectonics shaped this place. There are millions of years of layers of rocks, and dramatic blowholes eaten out by the sea.
When you stand there on the rocks, you can feel the millions of years of coastal weathering, the grinding down of solid rock as it is also being thrust up by the earth's tectonic plates.
So for this painting, I wanted to somehow honor the eons, the layers, and the earth's constant movement. I achieved this by turning an older landscape painting (of Southland) on it's side, and layering the new painting on top.
If you look closely, you can just make out the layers of the landscape underneath, now on its side. The rocks almost mimmick old men, but you have to use some imagination!
I used a palette knife and impasto technique (thick paint) for drama and texture.
