Dimensions: 700mm wide x 980mm high x 35mm deep
This work is quite textured, which I created using a palette knife and thick paint. However the areas that need to soft and silky were painted with a brush.
STORY
This work celebrates the humble Estuary. This one looks over the Waimea Estuary back towards the hills of Nelson, from Best Island near Richmond.
Best Island is home to Greenacres Golf Club, and a model boating club. It is one of the islands surrounding the slightly more famous Rabbit Island (Motuara), and home to many gorgeous birds.
I biked there one day and was so taken with the reflections in the silky water, it went straight on my "must paint" list. And here we are!
My estuary paintings are not complete without a few of the characters that inhabit it, in this case a spoonbill, and a couple of spoonbill buddies in the distance.
